A Message from the DirectorsThe MD/PhD Program at the University of Washington is dedicated to the training of medical scientists who desire to carry out fundamental research in clinically important human diseases. The program is funded in part by the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) from the National Institutes of Health. This program is national in scope and accepts students from all regions of the country. We anticipate admitting 12-14 students each year. Among the MD/PhD programs in the United States, ours offers an exceptionally wide choice of mentors and fields of study. The strength of the University of Washington is in quantitative sciences, particularly molecular and bioengineering approaches to human disease. The research is matched by outstanding medical sub-specialty and primary care training. The University of Washington School of Medicine is centrally located in Seattle on a single campus. Research is well funded and offers state-of-the-art facilities for studying human diseases. Seattle is a dynamic city, offering an exciting and accessible cultural variety, situated amidst a ring of towering mountains, unspoiled forests, and unpopulated wilderness. The quality and variety of our graduates' research accomplishments are a source of great pride. We carefully monitor students' progress during both medical and graduate education, and offer them guidance and encouragement in selecting among exciting career choices. We look forward to your application. Lawrence A. Loeb, MD, PhDOliver W. Press, MD, PhD Mary-Claire King, PhD |
