University "U" District

The University District is a dynamic neighborhood servicing the academic community and surrounding areas. Like many quarters of Seattle, it is really two districts in one "the Ave" and University Village. The Ave, as locals call University Way, is the main thoroughfare through the district and just a block west of campus. It's a haven for academics and locals in search of espresso, a place to study or a good lunch special. Restaurants in the area run on the inexpensive side and represent diverse nationalities. After classes many people filter into the pubs and bars that populate the Ave for live music, pub grub and beer. Used bookstores and vintage clothing shops are abundant in the area. To the east of campus is University Village an open-air shopping center that draws patrons to its mix of national and local retailers. This upscale business area with its shops, services and restaurants has become the U-District's commercial center. Housing in the area is affordable; with apartments and houses just blocks from campus the neighborhood is a common choice for students.
