Montlake

Close to the University District, Montlake is surrounded by water with Lake Union to the west, Lake Washington to the east and the Lake Washington Ship Canal to the north. Streets along this neighborhood of well kept homes and manicured lawns tend to end at the shore of a lake or entrance to a park. Montlake prides itself on the Washington Park Arboretum, a 230-acre natural area showcasing an international tree collection and a tranquil Japanese garden. This refuge in the city is frequented by those who come to see hundreds of rhododendrons bloom in the spring and view the brightly colored foliage in the fall. Each May, Montlake host's Opening Day, the first day of boating season in Seattle, thousands of people line "the cut" to watch the parade of boats and cheer on crews as they row in the Windermere Cup. A short walk over the bridge that spans the ship canal, which locals refer to as "the cut", brings walkers to the southeast edge of campus.
