Fremont

A signpost in the median of Fremont's main thoroughfare welcomes passersby to the "Center of the Universe". While a few blocks up from Fremont Street a troll lurks underneath the north end of the Aurora Avenue Bridge. And not far from there is a sculpture of Vladimir Lenin in front of a taco bar. Welcome to Fremont. It's an arty, bohemian neighborhood in northwest Seattle, where locals organize parades to celebrate the summer solstice and host an Oktoberfest complete with a microbrew festival. The area abounds with coffee houses and ethnic restaurants, trendy bars and eclectic shops. On Sundays, the neighborhood hosts a flea market with vendors peddling artwork, antique furniture and unique clothing. Housing in the area consists of single-family homes, apartments and modern condominiums. A short bike ride along the Burke Gilman Trail provides a quick way to get to campus.
