Vancouver, British ColumbiaThe vibrant and modern city of Vancouver, British Columbia embodies Northwest living at its finest. Vancouver's skyline is back dropped by snowcapped mountains and evergreen forests stretching to the Pacific Ocean, conveying the impression that this city is an urban oasis amid the wilderness. Vancouver's dynamic balance between cosmopolitan living and gateway to the wilds can be confirmed when riding the Skytrain, where it's common to see a mix of business professionals and shoppers headed downtown as well as skiers or snowboarders geared up to reach the slopes on Grouse Mountain or Cypress Mountain, near the northern edge of the city. Other recreation opportunities to indulge those who want the best of urban and outdoor living include kayaking through English Bay near Kitsilano Beach or combing the sandy shores of Wreck Beach while looking out onto the Pacific. Vancouver's cosmopolitan side is showcased by Robson Street near the heart of downtown; its strip is animated with clubbers and bar hoppers from early evening to the wee hours of the morning. If it's hockey season, sports fans should be sure see the National Hockey League's Canucks play a game at BC Place Stadium. While year-round, shoppers can head to the large department stores and boutiques prevalent in the commercial district and Pacific Center; where favorable exchange rates tend to make US dollars go further. Granville Island is also a central location for boutique shopping and art galleries amid maritime and produce markets. World class dining showcasing regional and international menus abound on almost every street for a variety of price ranges. Head north of downtown Vancouver to explore some of British Columbia's rainforests and for a walk across the Capilano Suspension Bridge, 450-feet above the Capilano River. For breath-taking views of Vancouver and the Cascades take a gondola ride, on North America's largest aerial tramway, to the peak of Grouse Mountain. On top of the mountain, explore the wildlife refuge or ski the powder-covered slopes. Next to the downtown skyline is Stanley Park, Canada's largest urban park, a 1,000-acre playground for residents and visitors. Its large grassy areas are ideal for picnics or cricket pitches for matches on Sunday afternoons. Trails and bike paths run through the park allowing for full exploration of its gardens, beaches and botanical delights. On the east side of Stanley Park is the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre, Canada's leading aquatic conservation center and home to orcas, beluga whales, harbor seals and the marine life of the Pacific Ocean. Just 140 miles north of Seattle, a visit to Vancouver provides a refreshing change of pace and a chance to relax and explore another premier Northwest city.
