Astoria, OR

When explorers Lewis and Clark built Fort Clatsop over the winter of 1805, they established the first American settlement west of the Rockies. Today, Astoria is a bustling port and historic community that celebrates its maritime heritage. Stoll along the piers in downtown Astoria to check out ships, buy freshly caught fish or dine at restaurants with views of the Columbia River as it flows into the Pacific Ocean. Antique shops and eclectic boutiques can be found around every corner of downtown and on Sundays farmers and vendors set up a market along several blocks. Charming Victorian homes grace the hills above Astoria's commercial district, while other historical attractions and museums can be found throughout the surrounding area. Popular places to visit include the Columbia River Maritime Museum, Heritage Center Museum, Fort Astoria, Fort Stevens State Park, and Fort Clatsop National Memorial.
